College Football Preview
Arkansas at #3 Alabama
Saturday, 3:30 pm Eastern – CBS
Third-ranked Alabama opens up the SEC portion of their schedule with a game on Saturday against Arkansas. It could be an interesting matchup on CBS considering Arkansas has a high powered offense led by quarterback Ryan Mallett.
Alabama is a 17.5 point favorite with a total of 58 at SBG Global.
Alabama is 3-0 to start the season including an opening win against Virginia Tech. Two weeks ago the Crimson Tide was disinterested but still routed Florida International. Head coach Nick Saban wasn’t happy about the performance and made sure his team responded last week and they did as they routed North Texas 53-7. “Until today, I wondered, ‘Was this team really going to fulfill its full potential?’” Saban said. “I just wasn’t pleased with the lack of consistency we played with in the first two games. We played really well at times and at other times we didn’t, but I feel like we were much more solid and we made some improvement.”
Now things get serious for the Tide as they start SEC play. “Everything we’ve done up to this point is all good and grand as far as getting the cobwebs out,” said quarterback Greg McElroy, “Now it’s time to really start playing. Our goal is to win an SEC championship, an SEC West championship, all those things. And we can’t get it without a victory next week (Saturday).”
Alabama could be tested by an Arkansas offense that is second in the country, averaging 538 yards per game. Mallett has thrown for 717 yards in two games and he leads college football with a 193.5 passer rating. It will be interesting to see how he does against the Alabama defense.
Alabama has won three of the last four overall against the Razorbacks and four of five in Alabama. They lead the all-time series 11-8 after routing the Razorbacks 49-14 last year.
