Wimbledon Betting – Federer Advance; Vedasco, Simon Don’t
The Wimbledon finals odds are getting clearer as we move closer to the end of the tournament. It was moving day on the men’s side as a lot of seeds were facing each other and there were some upsets.
At the top of the food chain, Roger Federer had no issues with Robin Soderling – again. If you recall, the two met up in the French Open finals and the offshore sportsbook odds makers had Federer as a huge favorite and he panned out. After that match, Soderling said “nobody beats me 11 straight times” but that’s exactly what Federer did today.
No. 4 seed Novak Djokovic had no problems advancing as smoked Dudi Sela and No. 6 seed Andy Roddick also won in straight sets.
The first upset of the day was No. 7 seed, Fernando Verdasco, who took on the chin at the hands of No. 22 seed Ivo Karlovic. Karlovic downed Verdasco rather easily, in four sets.
No. 8 seed Gilles Simon didn’t even put that much effort as he was ousted in three quick sets by Juan Carlos Ferrero, winning only 11 games overall.
The story of the day has been one that sports predictions didn’t envision: Lleyton Hewitt advancing to the quarter-finals. For Hewitt, this will be his first Grand Slam quarter-finals in three years and nobody saw this one coming.
Hewitt was on the ropes today against No. 23 seed Radek Stepanek as he found himself down two sets. But Hewitt and his never-quitting mentality pulled out the next three sets as the Czech only won five games the rest of the way.
On the women’s side, there weren’t too many surprises. Many people are betting management is happy to see the Williams sisters still around and playing as both advanced in straight sets. No. 1 seed Dinara Safina had a tough battle with No. 17 seed Amelie Mauresmo but eventually prevailed. It was the first ever match to be played under the new, high tech roof, which had to be closed for part of the match.
No. 4 seed Elena Dementieva, No. 8 seed Victoria Azarenka and No. 11 seed Agniezka Radwanska advanced. No. 13 seed Ana Ivanovic, No. 10 seed Nadia Petrova and 17-year-old American surprise girl Melanie Oudin were all bounced.
