The 2009 Kentucky Derby is only four months away and it’s already shaping up to be a competitive race.

The son of Smart Strike, Square Eddie is 2-3-1 in seven starts and has earned over $787,000. He’s coming off a second-place finish to another Derby contender, The Pamplemousse, in the San Rafael Stakes on Jan. 17. Old Fashioned is undefeated in three races, and Pinoneer of the Nile is the Bob Baffert hopeful out of California.

Break Water Edison is 2-1-0 in five starts and Vineyard Haven is 3-0-1 in four starts. The other horse is the 2008 Two-year-old Colt Eclipse Award winner Midshipman. He’s earned $1.3 million, and his record is an impressive 3-1-0 in four starts. The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner is wintering in Dubai, with Vineyard Haven, as part of Sheikh Maktoum’s obsession to win the Derby. He is expected to return at some point in May.
